What does the Strategy Readiness Assessment examine?

The assessment looks at five connected aspects of effective strategy.

Understanding the Challenge

How clearly leadership understands the most consequential issue the organisation needs to address - including its causes, external context and relative importance.

Strategic Choice & Focus
Whether strategic priorities represent meaningful choices about where the organisation will concentrate effort and, equally importantly, what it will not pursue.

Coherence
Whether major initiatives, decisions and actions reinforce a common strategic response rather than operating as a collection of individually worthwhile activities.

Commitment & Execution
Whether strategic priorities are reflected in ownership, accountability, leadership attention, investment and the allocation of scarce resources.

Challenge, Learning & Adaptation
Whether assumptions are challenged, evidence is considered openly and the strategy can adapt when circumstances materially change.

What will you receive?

After completing the assessment, you will receive an immediate indication of your organisation’s strategy readiness and a personalised PDF report.

Your report will identify your overall readiness position, areas of relative strength, issues that may warrant attention, strategic patterns emerging from your responses, practical priorities to consider and questions that can support discussion with your leadership team or board.

The assessment is designed as a high-level diagnostic rather than an audit or substitute for a full strategic review.

Who is the assessment for?

The Strategy Readiness Assessment is designed primarily for founders, board members, CEOs, directors and senior leaders who want to test how effectively strategy operates in practice.

It can be useful when preparing for a strategy review, responding to significant organisational change, examining execution challenges, questioning whether priorities remain sufficiently focused, or simply seeking an independent way to structure a leadership discussion.

No knowledge of a particular strategy framework is required.

Carn Advisory supports leadership teams in the Isle of Man, the UK, and internationally, with practical strategy, governance and sustainability advice.

What is Strategy Readiness?

Strategy readiness describes an organisation’s ability to move from strategic thinking to effective strategic action.

An organisation can have a strategy document, annual planning process and extensive performance reporting without necessarily having strong strategic readiness.

The more useful questions are whether leadership has diagnosed the right challenge, made meaningful choices, concentrated resources behind those choices and created a coherent set of actions.

Readiness also depends on the organisation’s ability to challenge its assumptions and recognise when changing conditions require its strategic response to change.

The level of process required will vary. Smaller organisations may operate effectively with relatively informal disciplines, while larger or more complex organisations often require greater structure to maintain strategic coherence across teams and management layers.

The objective is therefore not to maximise strategic process. It is to ensure that the organisation has enough strategic discipline to make good choices and act on them consistently.
